Born and raised in Hong Kong from a poor family, I know all the hardships of poverty. Six months before I turned twenty, my school friends helped me to get a passport and a plane ticket for England where I became a State Registered Nurse. I came to the USA in 1978. America is known as the "land of opportunity", for which I take the meaning as "you work hard, and you will be rewarded". Since living in this country, I never hit a bonanza, but I have earned something precious to my heart. That is a Bachelor of Degree of Art from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. Art has been my escape and I often dream to become an artist since a young age. I am serious about art and believe that education can unleash my potential. In order to gain further knowledge about art, I pursue a higher learning. I now reach the mid-way of a Master program in painting at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
I share Matisse's art philosophy, that is to perceive art as a mental comforter to relieve distress from modern living. In my view of subject matter, I am inspired by the Chinese painters of the past. They painted the most mundane objects and turned them into something special. My work shows their influence of simplicity with a touch of abstract quality and drama, and it is how I see the world. My artistic goal is to remind viewers the beauty of simple pleasure in this high-tech world.
